Dexter Senior Center- Social Sustainability
The Dexter Senior Center serves an important role in our community. It provides a social environment for our residents. It provides activities, transportation, meals, and other support.
I know that Meals on Wheels allowed my own grandmother to continue to live in her house for an additional 5 years.
The services provided by the Dexter Senior Center will become more and more important as our community ages and our families are called on to support their older parents.
Personally, I was sad when I learned that the Dexter Community Schools Multigenerational Activities Millage failed. I also understand concerns of those who voted no.
If elected mayor, I would work with the Senior Center leadership and other community leaders to secure a future for the Senior Center.
At this time, I do not know if that would mean working with the Dexter Community Schools, working with surrounding townships, and/or working with Washtenaw County.
Although it would be too big for the City of Dexter to do on its own, we could take the lead to help foster this along, similar to how we helped facilitate the sale of Gordon Hall to the Dexter Historical Society.
In an ideal world, I would like to see the concept expanded to function as a true civic center, providing opportunities for our younger residents and a space for our citizens to gather and create a third place.
What would you like to see in a Dexter Civic Center?
